Monday night is usually quiz night.

Mastermind followed by Only Connect followed by University Challenge.

About a month ago, Sue and I had attended The Griffin on a Monday night and noticed that a number of tables were reserved for a quiz. We weren’t interested at the time but a few days later, talking to friends Linda and Pete, we hatched the idea of taking part in the next one.

On another visit to The Griffin, I mentioned our intention for Matt and Caz and they were happy to join our team.

Yesterday was a Monday but we weren’t having to put up with Myrie, Coren-Mitchell nor Rajan as we had a date with our own quiz-master, Cassie.

We arrived a little before seven (quiz starting at half past) and were lucky to find the big table empty so Sue grabbed that for our team of six whilst I procured drinks at the bar.

Linda and Pete arrived a little later with Matt and Caz just in time for the start.

We needed a team name; Linda suggested The Misfits, and as no-one disagreed that was sorted. We paid our entry fees (a quid each) and settled down for Round One – General knowledge. The first round wasn’t too bad and we reckon that we did alright.

Round Two – sport – not so good but not too bad.

The last round before a break was entitled “Cheese or Service Station?”. Cassie readout a list of names and we had to decide whether (you guessed it) it was a cheese or a service station. Some were obvious, like Gordano (Service Station) and Bowland (Cheese) but we had to guess at a lot of them.

During the break we continued with the picture round where we had to identify two actors who had played the same character. Caz (and Matt) were great with this.

After getting more drinkies, it was Guess the Year. A number of questions about a particular year with bonus points for the year. I think that we did well with this one especially as one of the questions was about The Dammed and New Rose (1976).

TV / Film followed with a music round to finish off proceedings.

After a short break, the quizmaster was back to announce the results which, we were told, were very close. There were six teams and the results were read out in reverse order.

Sixth – not The Misfits.
Fifth – not The Misfits.
Forth – not the Misfits.

… and into the top three …

in third place … The Misfits.

The top three places were each separated by one point.

We were very happy with our performance and a great night was had by all.

We shall be returning in a month’s time to see if it was just luck or whether we can do as well if not better.
