I returned from work and, as it’s Friday, found Kassie working from home (our home) at least until five.
We were to drop Kassie back at home and we decided to have one more attempt at finding the Bentley Woods geocache.
We have been trying to find this bugger for a while having visited something like half a dozen times. Even with hints from the owner we have always come up empty-handed.
Being not too sure of the accuracy of the GPS on my iPhone we took along a standalone GPS unit this time.
Both GPSs pointed at the same area (as we have searched before – obvs.) so we started to walk along the path peering intently through the undergrowth for a fallen tree.
After around ten minutes, Sue points into the undergrowth and asks “What about that?” Handing me a pair of gloves. I bushwhack my way though nettles and bramble to uncover a downed tree and there at the base is a false rock containing the log book – YAH !
Returning to the car, Sue declares that our find is worthy of celebratory pint but I point to a nearby cache on the phone. “Seeing as you’re so good today”, I say, “Fancy finding this one?”
We make our way to a nearby field and following the cache description, trust the GPS and follow the needle into an overgrown corner.
After a bit of rummaging through the brambles and holly, I end up at the foot of a tree. Looking up I notice a bird box and looking down, I pick up a stick. Then I notice that there is a length of paracord tied to said stick. The cord goes up the tree and into the bottom of the bird box.
“Found it!” I declared. “There’s a rope to pull but I’m not sure how we’ll get it back afterwards” I state but give it a gentle tug anyway.
The cord pulls down and we discover that it’s attached to a retractable tape measure – so that’s how it goes back. With the tape pulled to ground level, the cache is revealed, log extracted and the business done.
A very clever idea and well worthy of a favourite point.
After two very satisfying cache finds, it’s off to the nearby Church End Brewery Tap for the celebratory pint but as we’d found TWO caches, we had TWO pints.
To soak up some of the alcohol (although, technically, Sue was on orange juice) I had a cheese and onion (or should that be onion and cheese) batch (we are close to Coventry) and Sue had a pork pie topped with Stilton.
Turns out this Friday the Thirteenth wasn’t unlucky for us.
