In one of my previous jobs (Birmingham Airport), I worked with a guy called Clive Barnacle. For a while we were neighbours (well the same road).
Unfortunately, seventeen years ago, Clive succumbed to a rare form of stomach cancer and was sadly taken from us.
Initially, I assume, Clive’s wife, Cheryl, started a bit of fund raising for Cancer Research to pay back for the help they had received during Clive’s illness and has just carried on. To date, Cheryl had raised over three quarters of a million quid for the charity.
Today, we decided to take it easy and pop into a couple of garden centres. Looking on facebook we noticed that Cheryl was doing a bit of a fund raiser at Dobbie’s, Atherstone so that would be one of the centres visited.
Arriving at Debbie’s, we picked up some fresh veg from the ‘vegetable man’ before making our way through the shop and out to the craft fairs where Cheryl had set up her stall.
The last time we met, according to my failing memory, was a party for another airport worker, Pete Normansell.
We approached Cheryl’s stall and just stood there waiting for her to remember us. A big smile showed us that we were remembered, followed by hugs and a good old chat.
After catching up on what we and our families had been up to we decided to meet up and have provisionally picked the Church End Brewery Tap (Clive favourite pub). Cheryl’s off to Tunisia this week and we to Hastings the following week but once the hols. are over, we’ll get something arranged.
