Hitting the Beach

After another drizzly night, the precipitation stopped and it was decided to hit one of the local beaches.

Relying on our friends local knowledge, Praa Sands was chosen. Checking the Adventure Lab website revealed a series at that location so that would give me something to do whilst others were combing the beach.

We drove down through showers and on arrival it wasn’t actually raining – so that was a bonus.

As the rest moved towards the beach, I started on the AdLab with the first question being based at the car park. The answer was found but the one thing I was having trouble finding was a decent Mobile signal.

After fruitless minutes wafting my phone around trying to conjure up some signal, I gave in and went to locate the others.

A quick scan revealed my companions down at the water’s edge, heads down scouring the sands for interesting stones, shells or sea glass.

Linda was in the water – well at least to ankle depth. We had initially considered coming here to swim but the weather had put us off the idea. However, paddling looked doable so it was off with the trainers and socks the trousers were rolled up.

Refusing the knotted hankie, I waded in feeling the refreshing water lap around my toes.

Occasionally, I did allow the waves to get the better of me so ended up with slightly damp trouser legs.

Slightly damp trousers are nothing compared to the time, on Arran, that I went paddling, slipped on a rock and ended up going full length. At the time, my first though was “My phone, my wallet”. Both were swiftly extracted, shaken and placed on a nearby projecting rock. At that point, I was soaked through so took the opportunity to have a little swim much to the chagrin of my young grandson who had been told that we wouldn’t be swimming – just paddling.

By the time we had retraced our steps back to the car park, it was near enough time for a spot of lunch. Luckily, next to said car park was The Welloe. This establishment is a sister pub to The Ship that we visited yesterday although very different inside. Whereas The Ship was what I’d call a proper pub (with beermats on the ceiling and random objects dotted around) The Welloe was quite minimalist with huge windows overlooking the bay.

An added bonus was that The Welloe had WiFi so after grabbing the password, I was able to log the answer to the first part of my AdLab.

There are two types of Adventure Lab. The usual allows you to find the five separate part in any order but the sequential type has to be done in a particular order. In fact you have to successfully answer each part before you can access the next, So in today’s case, until I had submitted the correct answer for part one I was unable to proceed further.

After lunch, we returned to the sands with me having to backtrack to get part two whilst the others continued east.

With number tow answered, I had to return to The Welloe to utilise the WIFi before moving on the three.

Part three was soon answered but being unable to log it, I joined the others on the beach, passing a group of Coastguards.

Once we had had enough of the beach (and the rain which had steadily increased) we headed back to the sanctuary of the car, stopping long enough to use the WiFi. We weren’t going back and forth to get the other two – maybe another day?

It was still early afternoon and looking for something to while away a while. I think that it was Pete who suggested a round of Crazy Golf. Penwith Golf Course was chosen especially as it was, sort of, on the way back to base.

We started off in the dry but hole eighteen was completed in anything but. The whole thing was well mannered with a little jibing, especially between our friends.

After the final hole, we retired to the local cafe for warm drinks and cake whilst the scores were tallied.

Usually, when they play each other, Pete beats Linda. Today it was Linda’s turn, beating her hubby by eleven strokes.

Even more amazing was the fact that I, somehow, came second.

The last time that I played, if memory serves me correctly, was a long time ago. Thinking back, that was also in the rain so maybe that’s my golfing forte?
