In a desperate attempt to get, at least, somewhat ready for Sunday’s 800 metre run, I dragged the dogs out for a bit of a walk / run effort a day or so ago.
Today, I continued with the easy going walk / run format but tried to add a little more running.
My other half asked if I wanted to go to the pub (daft question!) so I told her that I could walk / run there and meet up.
What is Fartlek ?
Fartlek training is a kind of running training which involves random variations in speed and intensity, alternating between bursts of sprinting and slower ‘recovery’ jogging. Unlike interval training, which involves sprinting over specific distances, then recovering for specific amounts of time, fartlek training is much looser, leaving the runner to decide when and how long they will sprint or jog for.
I started with a warm up walk for about half a mile before a cautious run into Water Orton.
After a recovery walk, I ran across the playing field and along Gypsy Lane before reverting to a walk.
I tried, where possible, to run the off-road sections (less stress on the joints). The running did seem to get easier during this exercise but only managed around nine to ten minutes per mile (equating to a 4:30 800m).
On arriving at The Griffin, I took a few minutes to cool down before nipping into the gents to change into less sweaty, normal clothing. I entered the boozer and was just finishing my first pint when Sue arrived.
At least, I have proved that I can run half a mile so need to look at the speed aspect.
I’m planning on visiting the running track tonight to try and get a rough speed for the distance then I can work out some splits for the big event on Sunday.
