My daily dog walks often get recorded and posted on Strava. Not very quick but they walks are a conscious effort so I feel it proper to include them.

The dogs hate being separated so I tend to walk them together (note to self – this separation anxiety needs sorting). Now when one dog finds something worthy of sniffing, the other, thinking that they are missing out, will also sniff the same thing even if they have to back-track to reach it. This results in a not particularly brisk walk.

A typical daily walk will look something like this …

The canine hardware consists of Halti head collars which I hold in my left hand with the dogs both walking on the same side.

This morning, I tried something a little different. Instead of holding the leads in my hand, I looped them through a belt similar to this …

The main advantage of this is that both are my hands are free. A downside is that, especially with the ‘double’ Halti leads, leash management is important to prevent tangles.
We gave it a try and I am happy to report that all went well. When Gabby and Misty swapped positions, I just had to coax them back into position, usually without stopping.
The best bit though was that we were able to walk at a much faster pace …

I’m sure that this situation can be further improved by trying a couple of things.

  1. The Halti lead has a ring in the middle through which I could attach the belt.
  2. Instead of the Halti head collar, I could try using harnesses and ‘normal’ leads
  3.  (more of a 2a really) use a lead with a short bungee incorporated as a shock absorber. I used to use one of these when Gabby and I used to run but I’m sure that I only have one.
I may give these options a go on our next outing and report back.
