When Sue finally rose, she asked if I’d like to go to the pub for dinner. I suggested a Harvester meal but she insisted on a pub lunch – who was I to argue ?

Of course, there’s only ever one pub that we go to (it’s our Winchester).

We took a drive out arriving around a quarter past one; ordered drinks and food.

Sue went for the Pie and Chips whilst I picked the Cheese and Broccoli Bake with chips.

Half way down my first pint, the food arrived and we tucked in.

The food was excellent, and the beer (as usual) delicious.

As I went up for my second pint (Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby), one of the barmaids came out of the kitchen with a bowl of chips. The kitchen was closing and, somehow, they had some chips going spare.

The barmaid looked at me and said, “You’ve just eaten so you won’t want these” and the proceeded to walk around the bar to see if there were any takers. There wasn’t.

As she returned to the bar, I offered to take them off her hands (just to help out) so I returned to the table with my pint and a second helping of chips.

The ale was supped and the chips consumed.

On New Years Eve, I had been given a free drink (only lemonade) but it was still a free drink – a very rare occurrence at The Griffin and today, less than a week later, free food.

I mentioned this to the landlady and she told me not to get used to it. I can’t see it happening too often !
