For Charity

Recently, I did a charity walk for Multiple Sclerosis Society raising £220 for this worthy charity.

Yesterday, I received a message from a good friend who is doing a one hundred and twelve kilometre bike ride for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

As Matt, sponsored me, it’s only fitting that I return the favour.

The same situation occurred with someone whom I know from my running days – a tit-for-tat exchange.

Now the cynical might say, ” Well, you’re just sponsoring them because they sponsored you – just keep the money to yourself!”

But they would be missing the point. Whenever anyone pledges a donation, the main beneficiary is the charity.

I should think that most people would like to donate to charity but won’t commit to a regular amount so the occasional charity event, be it a walk, run cycle, bungy jump or whatever, just makes parting with one’s money a little easier.

That’s not to say that I’ll be giving to every event but if I know them or consider their cause worthwhile and they are doing something a bit out of their comfort zone i.e. making an effort, it stands a good chance I’ll donate.

I did a hundred mile walk along the Thames a few years ago and I joke that the walk was easy, it was getting the money out of those who’d promised to donate. Luckily, these days, with the likes of JustGiving (as well as others) it is so easy to fire up a web page and add your little bit to all those worthwhile causes.

I’ll conclude by saying – help Matt on his bike ride.

Thank You
