… the final frontier. No !

A benefit from working is that there is usually somewhere there where little used tools can be stored instead of taking up room at home. Until recently, I have stashed away …

  • Car Roof Rack
  • Treadmill
  • Tool Box
  • Tool Bag
  • Mac Pro (cheese grater)
  • 2 x Tile cutters

A consequence of retirement is that space must be found for all this at home.

The treadmill came home a few weeks ago and is temporarily stored in the cinema.

Last week, I brought home the tools and Mac Pro with no real idea as to where these items were going to end up.

Most things will need to go into my office but first I needed to make some space (hence the post’s title).

After some mental reorganisation, I decided that some ubiquitous Kaplan shelving from ikea should help alleviate the problem.

I mentioned to Sue, on Saturday morning, that we needed to go to ikea that evening to pick up some units that I had ordered.

”Give Vicky a call”, Sue instructed, “She’s looking for something to do”. She left at the chance and we agreed to picked her (and son Charlie) up at around four, giving us ample time to look a round the store before my six o’clock collection.

The journey up the M6 was not as bad as expected on a Saturday afternoon and after a loop of the closest car park to the entrance proved unfruitful, parked the car a little further away where there were plenty of spaces. To be honest, it wasn’t all that far distant.

Vicky was on a mission to buy a new pizza cutter whilst Sue and I weren’t after anything in particular but I had a feeling that we’d end up with something.

We took a leisurely stroll around, interacting (some more than others) with the numerous and varied items for sale. Vicky found her pizza cutter (a few few other small bits) whilst Sue picked up a tea-strainer (for her herbal infusions), some glass shelves (LEGO for the use of) along with a few other small Knick-knacks.

Whilst wandering around, I received a text saying that my shelves were ready for collection – well ahead of the projected six p.m.

We paid for our small purchases before picking up the car and driving around to the collection point where a few minutes later, our goodies were wheeled out ready to pop into the car. We had ‘discussed’ whether everything would fit into the back of the car (with one third of the back seat folded down) but I had measured and was convinced that it would. Luckily, I was vindicated with all the boxes just slipping in.

The return journey was, again, uneventful. Perhaps Saturday afternoon is the time to go – the store wasn’t packed and the motorway was moving.

We dropped Charlie and Vicky back home then diverted to an unusually busy, Griffin where we enjoyed a couple of drinks in the conservatory before ordering a pizza (Vicky’s cutter must have put the idea into my head) and making our way home. The boxes would stay in the car until tomorrow.

Come Sunday, I was up early (well earlier than my other half) and started construction of two shelving units. Once the shelves were up, I then had to start relocating stuff. A lot was achieved but it still needs a little fine (and not so fine) tuning to get a logical home for everything.
